Billy Hogan, Lajamanu,Northern Territory, 1996

Billy is one of the senior men at the community of Lajamanu, a settlement of Walpiri people whose painting style is charchterized by iconic symbols set against shimmering white backgrounds. He frequently paints in the company of Abie Jangala and Paddy Gibson. A number of years ago on a trip to Lajamanu all of the younger people were gone off to sports weekend at the other Walpiri community of Yuendumu some three hundred miles away -- a big social event, particularly for the younger people. We were able to spend some quality time with the old men watching them paint. Billy was a gracious and amiable host that weekend.
